Book Layouts & International Editions
Smart, flexible templates built for global publishing
When a book is translated for international markets, the text size changes completely. English sentences take up vastly different spaces compared to languages like German or Chinese.
Because I design my book layouts with a background in Spatial Design, I plan for this text expansion from day one. I build generous margins and flexible layout structures directly into my Adobe InDesign files. This means foreign publishers can seamlessly drop in translated copy without needing to awkwardly crop the artwork or rewrite the text to fit the page.
A direct comparison of my layout work for You Are 25% Banana (published by Farshore/HarperCollins). Because Chinese characters use completely different spacing and line heights than other languages, the master grid was built from the start to handle both extremes smoothly without ruining the flow of the book.

Complicated layouts are no problem, as demonstrated by this
lift the flap book on chemistry.
Each page contained between 6-10
flaps, and each flap revealed both
information and an image below and on the reverse of the flap.
