Illustrating a Living Legend: Aging, Timeline, and Atmosphere
Working on The Met Georgia O'Keeffe: She Saw the World in a Flower—a key title in the prestigious What the Artist Saw series—was an extraordinary project that challenged me to blend biographical accuracy with deeply atmospheric storytelling.
For art buyers, publishers, and creative directors looking at my portfolio, this book highlights my ability to handle complex portraiture and long-form narrative pacing. One of the primary briefs for this project was to accurately draw Georgia O'Keeffe as she aged sequentially from an inquisitive child on a Wisconsin farm into an iconic, elderly woman in the New Mexican desert. Capturing the physical evolution of a real historical figure over nearly a century—while maintaining her distinct, recognizable identity and spirit on every page—required meticulous photographic research and precise character design.

Beyond the character illustration, I was tasked with creating an overarching, atmospheric layout to serve as an engaging biography timeline. Rather than placing her life against flat backgrounds, I developed rich, texture-driven environments that shifted in tone as her world did. The illustrations transition from the soft, sun-drenched wheat fields of her youth into the busy, structured geometric lines of the New York cityscape, and finally open up into the vast, bleached, and vibrant terrains of Ghost Ranch. This atmospheric approach transforms the timeline from a list of historical facts into an immersive visual journey.

Part of a beautifully curated collection by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and DK Children, this book invites young artists aged 7 to 9 to look at the world through O'Keeffe’s unique lens.
The book traces her creative milestones, exploring what led her to zoom in on the macro-details of nature and paint her legendary, large-scale flowers and desert bones. Paired with concise text by Gabrielle Balkan, my illustrations guide children through her life before prompting them with educational museum activities to create their own up-close masterpieces at home.
